The teams raised the money by selling specially designed T-shirts to raise awareness about the disease, which affects one in eight women, according to the American Cancer Society.

“As a team, we wanted to raise funds for a local cause so we decided upon the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital,” Kaitlyn Prescott, coach of the girls team, said in a statement.

The donation will help make a difference in the state, because Connecticut has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the nation, according to the society.

“We are so lucky to have the support of our local community, especially teenagers,” said Mary Heery, breast health specialist at the Smilow center. “These funds will be used to help all the women who turn to Norwalk Hospital for breast cancer care, such as patient support programs, counseling, research and clinical trials.”
