Darien Agent Juggles Sales and Construction

Cathy Lawton is putting everything she’s learned about houses in her 25 years in the real estate business to good practical use these days. She and her husband John have joined many of their friends and are downsizing. And they’re moving from Darien to Rowayton, where they’re building a new home.

Cathy met her architect, Joe Cugno, of Wilton when she sold a new house he had designed. The plans are coming along, and Cathy knows that the new house will have a gambrel roof and shingle siding. She and John will each have their own office in the three-bedroom home. The living area will be open with no separate living and dining room, in keeping with the new trend away from formal spaces. But there are still lots of decisions to be made, like the window style and the type of insulation.

This huge project isn’t keeping Cathy from her business, which is busier than ever. “I started working in real estate when my youngest went to school,” she says. A nanny helped with the three kids, and her business grew. “My husband worked out of the home, which was a help,” she says.

Most of Cathy Lawton’s business comes from referrals. “A lot of my friends are scaling down,” she says, “And my kids’ friends are moving back to Darien with their families.” She also notes that there are large numbers of younger people moving into town.

While Cathy helps settle new families into Darien homes, work on the Rowayton home is moving along. Right now, she says, it’s just a hole in the ground, but she’s hoping they’ll be moved in by Christmas. It had better be. “I’ve already committed to a Christmas party,” she says, laughing.

Do you know anyone building a new home? I’d love to talk to them. Please email me at fpearson@mainstreetconnect.us.
