Police: Man Tasered After Trying To Steal Wheels

NORWALK, Conn. - One man was shot with a stun gun after he and two other men allegedly tried to steel wheels off a minivan in Norwalk, police said.

According to police, a witness saw two or three men at the intersection of Prospect Street and Bedford Avenue trying to take the wheels off a minivan early Wednesday morning. When police arrived, they said they saw two men take off running. The minivan was propped up on two milk crates, police said.

Police said they chased one of the men, Luis Velez, 27, of Stamford, through several yards. Eventually, an officer tackled him near Van Buren Avenue, police said. Police said Velez elbowed the officer several times in an attempt to break free, and had to be shot with a stun gun. He was brought to Norwalk Hospital to have the stun gun darts removed, police said.

Police said they found another man, Pedro Alvarado-Tafur, 20, of Norwalk, hiding in a beige SUV near the minivan. Inside the SUV were several milk crates, as well as two tire irons, police said. He was taken into custody.

Alvarado-Tafur was charged with interfering with an officer, criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, all misdemeanors, and was held on a $50,000 bond. Velez is facing the same charges, plus assault on a police officer, a class C felony. He was held on a $105,000 bond.
