NORWALK, Conn. A man suspected of carrying a gun in a Norwalk housing complex said he is always armed when he comes to the city because he has been targeted by a local gang due to resentments stemming from two homicides, police say.
Kyle Freitag, 22, of 37 Beacher Road, Milford, was a close friend of Amos Brown, Jr., who died in 2010, according an affidavit filed at Norwalk Superior Court.
Freitag and William C. Harper, 22, of 60 East Elm St., Greenwich, were arrested Friday at a Norwalk Housing Authority complex. The pair headed to their car "frantically" and tried to back out after they spotted two officers patrolling the complex, the affidavit says.
Police say they recovered two semi-automatic pistols and 9.5 grams of marijuana from the car. One of the guns a .45-caliber Italian-made "Witness," had eight hollow-point bullets in the magazine, the affidavit said.
Tykwan Hunt, 17, of Bridgeport, was killed in Jan. 2008 in Norwalk, according to published reports. Amos Brown, Jr., was accused of the crime but acquitted in 2009. He died after being shot in the head in Aug. 2010.
Freitag testified in Brown's defense, according to the affidavit. Harper's many tattoos refer to the homicides, police say. The "R.I.P. JAB" on his right arm refers to Joseph Batemen, a January Norwalk homicide victim. He also has a "R.I.P Famous" tattoo on his arm. "Famous" was Brown's street name.
Freitag and Harper were both charged with criminal trespass third degree, carrying weapons in a motor vehicle, conspiracy, carrying a gun without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, illegal manufacture, distribution, sale of prescription drugs and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Harper was also charged with conspiracy to commit, sale, prescription within distance of a school. Both are being held on a court set bond of $75,000, reduced on Tuesday from an original bond of $250,000. Their next court date is July 30.
"I rather have my gun than not in Norwalk," Frietag said, acording to the affidavit. "It's my life out here and these cats hold me responsible for Tyquan's death."
