Matthew Dicesare, 27, was charged with operating under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane. He was held on $250 bond and will appear in court on Dec. 8.
Officers were conducting a DUI checkpoint early Thursday morning on West Avenue when the accident occurred, police said. The police car was parked in the road with its emergency lights flashing at about 1:30 a.m. when Dicesare rear-eneded it, police said.
An officer approached Dicesare's car and detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, according to police. Dicesare told the officer that he was fine, and also made statements like "I'm drunk" and I" can't believe I did this again," according to police reports.
Police said he also had a half-full bottle of Jameson whiskey in his car. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody, police said. His blood alcohol content was .259, more than three times the legal limit, police said.
Nobody was injured in the accident, and police said that the damage was minor.
