A truck carrying scrap pieces of aluminum flipped onto its side between exits 14 and 13 on the southbound side of the highway just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The resulting wreckage blocked all three lanes of the highway.

The truck’s driver was pinned in the cab when emergency responders arrived, and he was pulled out by Norwalk Fire Department firefighters. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but “his injuries do not appear to be life threatening,” said Deputy Fire Chief Gino Gatto.

The aluminum shavings, hydraulic fluid and motor oil spilled onto the highway after the crash. The Connecticut Department of Transportation and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called to help with the cleanup, which lasted into the early afternoon.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation by the Connecticut State Police. Investigators believe that an internal malfunction may have cause the truck's dump trailer to rise up and hit an overhanging bridge, Gatto said.

Interstate 95 had reopened all lanes in Norwalk by about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Traffic was still backed up through Norwalk and Westport and into Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon, DOT reports said.
