No Joke: Sitcom Boosts Economy

About $60 million will be spent in the Stamford area as part of the production of the new sitcom, "Are We There Yet?" on the cable channel TBS. "This is great for Stamford and the region, and it means more jobs," Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia said.

The producers, actors and crew of the newly minted sitcom were on-hand Friday at the Connecticut Film Center on Stillwater Avenue in Stamford along with Pavia and Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele to tell their economic success story.

"We've aired 10 episodes so far on TBS and will complete another 80 more in the next 15 months," said Terry Crews, star of the sitcom and a former NFL football player.

"This is just what the legislature had in mind when they established the Film Industry Tax Incentive Act in 2006," said George Norfleet, director of the state's Office of Film, Television and Digital Media.

Revolution Studio's Joe Roth, executive producer of the TV comedy, said, "We were attracted by the tax incentives and the proximity to New York, where the talent is easily accessible. And these are first-class facilities."

The Connecticut Film Center is a state-of-the-art sound stage and production facility that rivals the best in Hollywood, according to Alphose Ribeiro, who played Carlton Banks on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and is in town to direct the next six episodes of "Are We There Yet?"

"This is the wave of the future in film production. Things are changing rapidly in the film and television industry," he said.

"Are We There Yet?" airs Wednesday nights on TBS.
