HARTFORD, Conn. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called for a special session of the legislature on Thursday, June 30, in an attempt to get lawmakers to vote on a revised budget to close the states deficit.
Malloy said in a statement Thursday that a concession agreement with the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition, aimed at balancing the two-year $40.1 billion budget, looked "increasingly unlikely."
Calling the special session was necessary to close the budget deficit, said Malloy, adding, I am loathe to make the decision facing us at this junctureincluding layoffs, programmatic and municipal aid cutsbut I am left with no choice.
The governor said all options to close the deficit are on the table except additional tax increases and using surplus funds.
Working with the legislature we will have a balanced budget and one that, while making painful cuts and difficult decisions, will be balanced honestly without tricks or gimmicks, Malloy said in a prepared statement.
