Himes Defends Health Care Law in Fairfield County

WESTON, Conn. — First Selectman Gayle Weinstein's monthly brown bag lunch Monday focused on federal issues with special guest U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, the Democrat who represents Connecticut's 4th District.

Himes appearance drew a crowd of 60 who traded comments with the congressman. He spoke on economic issues, including high gas prices, as well as health care and Middle East politics. He covered the federal budget deficit and the lack of bipartisan cooperation in Congress.

Concerning health care, Himes defended his vote in favorite of President Barack Obama's initiative by saying 50 percent of local residents support it and most support individual elements of it.

Bob Gardner of Weston said he generally supports Himes. "I've been a big friend since he started about three years ago. He's balanced and well-informed," Gardner said.

Himes said gas prices are generally beyond government's control, and Gardner agreed. "The price rises because demand is up in other countries and we can't drill our way out of that," he said.
