Family Displaced by Fire in Norwalk Home

A West Norwalk home sustained heavy fire damage early Monday from a fire that was visible blocks away. When fire crews responded to the 12:30 a.m. call, they could see the flames as they approached, according to Deputy Chief Edward Prescott. When crews arrived, the fire had already taken over the second floor and the attic of the single-family structure at 25 Powderhorn Road, with flames shooting 30 feet in the air.

The five occupants, four adults and a 3-year-old child, escaped the blaze just before the fire department arrived. They were not injured in the blaze.

Fire crews made a quick search of the dwelling. They worked to contain the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to a neighboring property. Lt. Robert Juda sustained a neck injury when part of a ceiling collapsed on him while battling the blaze.

The fire was reported under control by 1:30 a.m., with fire crews remaining on scene to extinguish hot spots and assist fire investigators. All fire personnel cleared by 4:45 a.m.

Juda sought medical attention after the fire and did not return to work. The American Red Cross assisted in relocating the five residents.

Fire Inspector Kosmas Kalmanidis determined that a homemade brick oven located under the rear deck may have sparked the fire. The location of the oven and time of the fire contributed to the size of the fire before it was discovered.

Four engines, two trucks and one rescue and command car responded to the scene.
