Driver Enters No Plea in Hit-and-Run

The New Canaan woman charged in the hit-and-run death of an elderly Oenoke Ridge Road man in August did not enter a plea when she appeared in court Tuesday. Kate Regan, 32, was scheduled to be arraigned on charges of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility resulting in physical injury or death.

She will return to court Jan. 4 as her case continues in Norwalk Superior Court.

Regan, of 383 Michigan Road, was arrested Nov. 3 after a nearly three-month investigation by town police and the State Police Major Crime Unit. She turned herself in to police and was released on $10,000 bond.

According to police affidavits, Regan was not aware that her vehicle had hit 82-year-old Krishna S. Jayaraman on Aug. 18 as he stood at the mailbox in front of his home. Krishna died at Norwalk Hospital after suffering "multiple traumatic blunt injuries."

Regan appeared in court with her husband, Michael, and her attorney, John R. Gulash Jr. of Bridgeport. She was also accompanied by her parents and other family members.

Regan “feels horrible about the entire matter,” Gulash said, and her family offers condolences to the Jayaraman family. He would not comment specifically on the case Tuesday.

“We will take it one step at a time as we gather information,” Gulash said.
