Approaching Irene Knocks Out Power in Norwalk

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – As of 3 a.m. Sunday, Connecticut Light & Power reported the following power outages due to the approaching Hurricane Irene:

? 1,360 customers in Greenwich;

? 2,845 customers in Stamford;

? 1,550 customers in Darien;

? 549 customers in New Canaan;

? 344 customers in Norwalk;

? 405 customers in Wilton;

? 603 customers in Westport; and

? 450 customers in Weston.

United Illuminating is reporting one customer with power in Easton and 114 customers without power in Fairfield.

In Westport, according to the town's Twitter feed, fallen trees have been reported on Compo Road South at Bradley Road, Pritchard Lane, Roseveille Road at Lost Lodge, at 52 Cross Highway and Compo Beach Road. In New Canaan, the Department of Transportation reported Route 123 at Michigan Road was closed due to a downed tree.

The heavy rains overnight were bands of Hurricane Irene, which was expected to hit the state Sunday morning or midday. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the county until 3 p.m. Sunday.
