The center will house a new and expanded Emergency Department, the new home of the expanded Whittingham Cancer Center and a state-of-the-art Center for Digestive Diseases, among other improvements.
In addition to the new construction, the pavilion project also includes 35,000 square feet of renovated space at the site. Among the improvements from the renovation will be an updated Ambulatory Surgery facility.
The project marks the hospital's largest expansion effort in its 120-year history.
According to officials, the hospital has raised more than $27 million for the project, $10 million of which was donated by The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Family Foundation, Inc. and the McGraw family in honor of the late Anne and Harold McGraw.
“Norwalk Hospital means a lot to our family,” said Terry McGraw, during the ground breaking ceremony. “My parents had a lifelong commitment to helping people.”
In addition to the McGraws, the pavilion project also received $2.5 million from Carol and George Bauer, and another $2.5 million from the Whittingham family, whose cancer center at the hospital will move from its current location on the south side of the building to the new pavilion. Officials hope to raise another $2 million for the project.
“Today, I’m giving you all a prescription,” said Howard Eison, M.D., chairman of the Norwalk Hospital Foundation Board. “Please follow the care of these families, because if you do, you will lead a long and fruitful life.”
