'Money' is Coming to Norwalk

Craig Matters and other editors of Money Magazine are a little bit surprised: Norwalkers want to talk about real estate.

That's the preliminary news from the magazine's next Money Take Charge Live event, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall. The event is tailored to the interests of its participants, so people who are interested in attending submit questions when they register for the free discussion.

Top topics are investing for retirement, how to be a smarter investor and where home prices are headed.

The magazine began the series last year to capitalize on the challenging economy. The events are held in cities that Money named "Best Places to Live." Last year that was Eden Prairie, Minn., Louisville, Colo., and Franklin Township, N.J. And now Norwalk. "It's an honor," said Tad Diesel, Norwalk's director of marketing and business development.

No one was asking about real estate before, said Matters, managing editor of Money. "Last fall, we were still, 'Didn't want to talk about real estate at all,'" he said. "I think they were still licking their wounds a little bit. Partly I think it's probably springtime, the spring selling season. Partly I think maybe people feel like 'the flood' — pardon the weather outside — is over. And maybe it's time to start thinking about real estate again. So that is definitely a change we've seen in over the last eight months."

Diesel plans to attend. His question is about investing for retirement: How do you know the money will last as long as you do?

Matters said the answer is complicated, and Diesel will hear it Wednesday. He said, "That will be a discussion point."

Do you think the interest in real estate is encouraging?
