STAMFORD, Conn. Professional women from Fairfield and Westchester Counties met on Thursday, Sept. 15 to start the Go Red For Women Corporate Leadership Council in the area. The council will help women share business ideas, knowledge, and information about heart disease, a release said.
We wanted to make the corporate leadership council intimate, purposeful and meaningful. To bring women together who share similar interests in business development, networking, community, supporting women and making a difference, Mia Schipani of RMS Construction in Stamford, and one of the women who pioneered the event, said in the release.
With heart disease killing over 420,000 women a year it is the leading cause of death among women, the release quoted statistics given by Evelyn Cusack, MD from Stamford Hospital and guest speaker at the event. To compare it, breast cancer kills about 40,000 women a year, the release said.
Cusack, a cardiologist, also gave the group of women several lifestyle tips to decrease their risk of heart disease. The tips were: exercising (20-30 minutes at least 4X per week), eating healthfully (find a nutritionist who may guide you), consuming Omega-3 Fatty Acids, stress reduction, taking a multi-vitamin, weight management, and not smoking
