Best-Selling Humorist to Read at Library

GREENWICH, Conn. – Join best-selling author and humorist Bill Bryson on Oct. 14 at the Greenwich Library as he discusses his latest book, inspired by the objects found in his Victorian parsonage home in England.

In “At Home,” Bryson explores the history behind the place we call home. At one point in his life, the American-born writer lived in a part of England where nothing of great significance had happened since the Romans decamped. When he began to consider how little he knew about the ordinary things found it in that home, he got the idea of journeying from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Bryson’s bathroom provided the occasion for a history of hygiene; the bedroom, sex, death, and sleep; the kitchen, nutrition and the spice trade. Whatever happens in the world, he demonstrates, ends up in our homes, in the paint, the pipes, the pillows and every piece of furniture.

Greenwich was chosen as one of six cities in Bryson’s U.S. book tour. Bryson will also read from his other best-selling works, including “Notes From a Small Island,” “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid” and “A Walk in the Woods.” The latter was one of the Greenwich Library’s most popular books ever.

More than 6 million copies of Bryson's books have been sold in the U.S. alone.

Bryson visit is presented as part of the AuthorsLive@GreenwichLibrary program. The event is free, open to all and begins at 7 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium. There will be no Friday film that evening.

Diane's Books will provide books for purchase and signing at the event. For more information, contact Marianne Weill at 203-622-7933.
