The warm weather might beckon you outside, but while you're there it's always a smart idea to be aware of your surroundings and to be aware of the possibility of a bat encounter. You should also know that bats can fly inside a home (or garage or tent) as well.
Bats can transmit rabies -- an infectious disease spread through the bite of an infected animal -- which affects the nervous system. Rabies is fatal once symptoms develop.
If a bat bites or even scratches you, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and warm water and seek immediate medical attention. Whenever possible, the bat should be captured by a professional animal handler and sent to a laboratory for rabies testing.
Other mammals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and bobcats, can transmit rabies. Take the following steps to reduce the possibility of rabies exposure:
* Do not touch, pet, or feed wild or stray animals
* Report stray dogs and cats to animal control
* Avoid sick wild animals
* Place all waste, especially food, in covered trashcans
* Immediately and thoroughly wash all animal bites with running water and soap. Consult a physician.
