This Biz Has Got the Buzz

Marina Marchese is one lucky woman. Ten years ago, she stumbled on a passion when she was least expecting it, and today she has turned that passion into a profitable business. She's a beekeeper and honey entrepreneur, as well as the author of "Honeybee: Lessons From an Accidental Beekeeper."

"Honeybee" tells Marina's personal story of how she fell in love with bees, quit her job, moved to Weston, built her own hive and learned to harvest honey. Her hives have multiplied from one to 16, and she has learned to tend her bees so that they produce a variety of honeys. "We move the hives to areas where the flowers are blooming and that way we get interesting flavors in the finished honey," she said.

Marina spent some time in the wine business and, using her knowledge of wine, has developed a unique vocabulary for tasting honey. "Our philosophy is that every bottle of our own artisanal honey is a gourmet-worthy food that can be tasted and evaluated like wine," she says. Each honey has its own personality, depending on the flowers visited by the honeybees, as well as the soil, climate and temperature where the flowers were growing.

Did you know that honey is the only food that never needs refrigeration and never spoils? Or that one-third of the food produced in the world depends to some degree on honeybee pollination? These and a myriad other fascinating facts about bees and honey are found in Marina's book.

Today, Marina's Red Bee Honey company sells artisanal honey and honey-related products to gourmet shops and restaurants all over the country.
