Hot days followed by hard rain can take a toll on your flowerbeds. Here are some mid-summer gardening tasks that will keep your garden looking sharp through the fall.
Weeding is a synch after a heavy rain. Put on your "wellies" and grab a bucket. It's time to pull up the weeds that are stealing nutrition from your plants.
Don't be afraid to hack off the dead leaves from your perennials. If the plant has withered altogether, cut it at ground level. Perennials will come back next year.
Remove all the dead flowers. A garden looks neater without a lot of dead vegetation.
If you have "holes" in your beds after removing dead plants, head to the nursery. Chrysanthemums are starting to come in. Remember to water diligently if you plant new flowers.
Remember to "feed" your clippings and dead flowers to the compost bin. And make sure to turn the compost regularly.
