Reconsider Candy This Halloween

Have your kids already eaten enough candy in the weeks leading up to Halloween, ahead of the Big Day of candy eating? In preparation for All Candy-Eve, er, Halloween, some organizations want parents to be aware that there are ways to decrease the risk of cavities and other dental problems. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has tips for parents so children can have fun, but also maintain the proper oral hygiene during this sugar-centric celebration.

The AAPD suggests a mix of healthy snacks with Halloween candy, so that a balanced diet, including vegetables, grains or yogurt, is maintained. Children should also avoid eating chewy treats (think Gummy bears. etc.), which can cause damage when they stick to teeth.

Parents can even buy their kids seasonal toothbrushes, which are available in just about every holiday theme, so that children might be more motivated to brush their teeth.

According to the AAPD, scheduling a dental appointment around this time of year is also important. (It certainly can't hurt.)
