October Means Painting the Town(s) Pink

Local breast cancer survivors, family members and supporters will be painting the town pink this weekend in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will line Atlantic Street in a formation of pink hair, shirts, ribbons, sneakers, shoes and endless more creative expressions of togetherness.

National Breast Cancer Awareness month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease, as well as to raise funds for research as to its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer and is an opportunity to remind women to be "breast aware for earlier detection," according to the NBCA website.

Along with Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia and WABC-TV's meteorologist Bill Evans, the pink masses will kick off Stamford Hospital's month-long breast cancer awareness campaign in Veteran's Park this Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

During the event, individuals can visit the Bennett Cancer Center's pink tent to learn more about screening for breast cancer. In addition to the "Mile of Pink," Stamford Hospital has planned educational and social events that will take place in Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Westport and Norwalk.
