New Store Offers Art Deco, Mid-Century Treasures

If you're mad about the whole mid-century modern look, à la "Mad Men," there's a new store you should know about.

Montage Modern and Vintage at 1276 Post Road East in Westport, Conn. stocks an ever-changing collection of vintage home furnishings and period lighting. Each piece, ranging from mid-century, to Art Deco, to Modern styles, has been restored to its original condition. Accessories such as vintage barware, glasses, mirrors and vases are displayed on every level surface by the staff decorators who are also available for consultations.

Montage Modern and Vintage is co-owned by long-time business associates, Tom Roth and Robin Babbin. Roth says he has always had a passion for vintage items and antiques.

The new store was a natural transition from his Norwalk, Conn. store and workroom, Weathervane Hill, which carries home furnishing fabrics and furniture. Babbin has a background in graphic and textile design and worked for Weathervane Hill as design director.

The partners travel extensively looking for antiques that inspire them. “It’s not the period, it’s the piece,” explains Roth. “The store is an eclectic mix of pieces that are iconic and special. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, and tells a story.”

Babbin says they look for things with clean lines and classic design. “Our merchandise is a carefully selected collection of interesting conversation pieces.”

Babbin, her husband and two teenaged daughters have lived in Westport for 20 years. Tom Roth and his family have been Westport residents for 29 years. His daughter, son and five grandchildren also reside in Westport.

“Montage Vintage and Modern is a fun and inviting store,” Roth says, “We love to share the history and personality of every item.”
