Magnificent Stump Becomes a Passage

Here's an imaginative way to give new life to an old tree stump. This magnificent old stump keeps watch on a street corner in Ithaca, N.Y. Someone with great imagination and a sharp chainsaw carved a passage right through the middle of the stump, creating a living sculpture that delights passers-by. Does anyone know this tree artist?

Cutting down trees and carting them off your property can be an expensive proposition, ranging from a few hundred dollars for a small tree to several thousands for a large one, especially if it is close to your house and has to be removed one branch at a time.

And once the tree has been cut down, you'll be left with an unsightly stump. Many people decide to grind the stump right down to the roots so they can plant something new in that spot. Grinding the stump effectively kills the tree and prevents it from shooting new growth, but grinding means more money. The last time I had a stump ground away, it cost $500.

In an earlier column, I described ways to create floral sculptures in your garden by planting clematis next to the stumps. Clematis, a fast-growing vine, will cover the stump in leaves and flowers. In my garden, a huge stump is covered in English ivy. In the summer, I put a large pot of flowering annuals in the middle.
