Making the decision to move isnt always easy. At least, it wasnt for Catherine Avery, an interior designer, who moved to Norwalk eight years ago. Catherines husband, Bob, is a Norwalk native and the couple wanted to live close to his parents.
Weve been debating moving for a while, says Catherine, The hugest reason is to be closer to my daughters school, she adds. Caroline Avery is a kindergartener at the Unquowa School in Fairfield. So when the senior Averys moved inland to a retirement community, the junior Averys felt that they could move too.
Bob and Catherine's home is on a quiet cul-de-sac near the Silvermine Golf Club. But with more than 3,000 square feet of space for three people, Catherine finds that it is almost tragic to live in a house with several beautifully decorated rooms that we never use. She adds that on a personal level, both she and Bob are devastated to be leaving this house, which they had hoped to fill with children. I developed peripartum cardiomyopathy while I was pregnant with Caroline, Catherine says. Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a potential fatal condition that affects one in 3,000 pregnant women.
Catherine is realistic about what she needs to do to get her family ready to move. Part of downsizing is purging, getting rid of things, she says. Shes giving things away through her church and cutting her book collection in half. Going are all her old college textbooks, which have been moved over and over again, and quite a bit of her china. More difficult is deciding what to do with her collection of Russian boxes, many of which belonged to her grandmother. I may sell them on eBay, she says. But Im keeping all my Staffordshire houses.
Even though their home isnt on the market quite yet, the Averys are already looking at homes in Fairfield, identifying neighborhoods that they like. My broker advised me not to fall in love with anything, Catherine says with a laugh.
