Fairfield Reader Shares First Car Story

I was 18 years old and loved every ugly brown inch of my first car, a 1969 Dodge Dart. I also was terribly proud when I put my purple "Kenyon College" sticker on its bumper. The car never made it as far as Ohio, but it lives on in my memory.

I've been asking readers, via Facebook, to submit memories of their first car. Following is the third installment in this ongoing, reader-driven series.

This reminiscence is courtesy of Tom Reilly, of Fairfield.

"I was about 15 years old when I had my first car. I owned it for about a year. I used to drive it from the Bronx to New Rochelle, where I worked. It was a gray 1930 Studebaker that looked like a Sherman tank. It had 12 cylinders and cost $50. It had no radio or spare tire, as in those days there weren't too many extras. Although it used a lot of gas, it was not a problem because gasoline was 10 cents per gallon.

Keep your "first car" stories -- and photos -- coming. I'd love to run them here. Send me an email at jcurtis@mainstreetconnect.us.
