Fairfield County Tips Its Hat to Royal Wedding

With the wedding of the century only hours away, Fairfield County has begun celebrating in earnest. Wednesday evening, Double Exposure, the downtown Darien consignment shop, hosted a hat event, featuring headwear by Milliner to the Queen, Susie Hopkins.

Women of all ages were greeted by wine, hors d’oeuvres and more than one dozen original, handcrafted hats by Susie Hopkins. Plumes, sequins, bows and brims took center stage as women took turns trying on exotic, elaborate and wonderfully playful pieces.

“Susie has designed for the Queen,” said Merne Palmer-Smith, Double Exposure’s ex-model owner. “She’s designed for Princess Diana. And now, she’s been ‘summoned’ to design for Kate, too.” She’s referring, of course, to Catherine Middleton, Prince William’s betrothed. “All of Susie’s pieces we have here tonight were inspired by Kate.”

The ladies at the event were appropriately atwitter, discussing hats, Kate Middleton and the impending Royal Marriage.

“I don’t want to take it off,” said Norwalk’s Joann Mancuso of the peacock blue feathered hat she was wearing. I asked if she thought Kate Middleton would be responsible for bringing the hat back to main stream women’s fashion. “Sure she will.”

“Yes, I think hats are making a comeback,” said Merne. “And women are finding new ways to shake it up a little. A cute hat with a pair of cut-off shorts. Young women are mixing styles and making hats part of their statement.”

As for whether or not they would wake up early to watch the Royal Nuptuals live, opinions were mixed. “I probably will,” said Merne.
