Eat Local at Your Farmers' Market

Area farmers’ markets are in full, fresher-than-fresh swing these days, which means eating well at home is easier than ever. But apart from farm-raised produce and other natural treats, our area markets have plenty in the way of on-site dining, entertainment and home goods to offer.

Here’s a list of a few local farmers’ markets in Fairfield and Westchester Counties that make my short list of the best of the best.

Westport Farmers’ Market, Westport, Conn. – This outdoor market, located in the Imperial Avenue lot, adjacent to the Westport Women’s Club, nestled along the banks of the Saugatuck River is bursting with local wonders. Plenty of the state’s fabulous farmers make the scene every week, as do many local eateries and restaurateurs, like LeFarm and Boxcar Cantina. You’ll also find fresh seafood, handcrafted soaps and much more local flair. This market runs Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through November 3.

Rye Farmers’ Market, Rye, NY – Shoppers will find fresh New York produce, meats, and dairy products here, along with flowers, herbs, meats, and local wines. This market is open Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through December 18. It is located in the parking lot directly behind 73 Purchase St. in Rye.

Weston Farmers’ Market, Weston, Conn. – This upscale market kicks off Saturday, June 17, and opens every Saturday thereafter, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, through late September. Fresh local goodies are always available, and a portion of the market’s proceeds benefit the Weston Warm Up Fund, the Weston Senior Center, and the Weston Historical Society. This year, donations are also being taken for Thanksgiving turkeys for Weston families in need. This market is located on the grounds of the Weston Historical Society, at 104 Weston Rd.

Larchmont Farmers’ Market, Larchmont, NY – Baked goods, fresh produce, and artisan cheeses are just some of the treats that await you at this market. Find it near 1 Railroad Way, in the #3 MetroNorth parking deck off Chatsworth Ave. This market runs Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., through December 17.
