Don't Get Left in the Dark

Are you ready for blizzards and blackouts? Avoid being left in the dark by replacing your flashlights' old batteries now. Stock up on extra batteries and place flashlights in strategic spots — the kitchen, near entry points and on nightstands.

If you have a an iPhone, Blackberry or Android, consider downloading a flashlight application to use in an emergency. These apps use the Light Emitting Diode (LED) camera in the phone to shine a bright light just when you need it. Use it sparingly, though, as the light will run down the phone's power quickly.

The Red Cross Store sells a 200-hour LED glow stick that combines a flashlight, emergency flasher and whistle. These could come in handy at home, in the car and on camping trips. Check out the Red Cross's other emergency supplies here.

Lastly, take the time to run a blackout drill for the kids so they know what to do if the lights go out.
