Be Careful Out There

June is National Safety Month, and the National Safety Council is celebrating – by helping to prevent unintentional injury and death. It might sound morbid, but motor vehicle accidents, falls and overexertion remain leading causes of preventable death and injury in the United States. The Council's goal is to raise public awareness about safety at a time during the year when traditionally the largest number of accidental fatalities take place. According to the National Safety Council’s website, “The goal of National Safety Month is to raise public awareness of safety. June also is an appropriate month to focus our efforts on public safety, as the summer season traditionally is a time of increased unintentional injuries and fatalities.”

In fact, unintentional deaths reached an estimated 128,200 in 2009, compared with an estimated 125,800 in 2008. The 2009 estimate – the highest on record – is 47 percent greater than the 1992 total of 86,777, which was the lowest annual total since 1924.

June has be broken down into five themed sections on the NSC website: "Summertime Safety," "Preventing Overexertion," "Teen Driving Safely," "Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls" and "On the Road and off the Phone." You can download information about each topic. Don't you feel safer already?
