Tap This Maple Syrup How To

Your taste buds might be hibernating right now but here's their wake up call, it's maple syrup time!  Wilton's Ambler Farm will give you and your family the unique opportunity to learn the science and history of maple syruping. Then, you can start collecting your own. A training session takes place at the Farm on Feb. 12. First, you'll make dibs on your tree and hang your bucket to collect its sap. As the tree's sap slowly flows, Ambler Farm will keep watch and let you know when it's time to return for the especially fun part. (The season runs from early February to mid-March.) In the Farm's sugar shack, your bucket of sap will be boiled down to become delicious syrup to take home.

According to the New England Maple Museum, maple syrup's discovery was a happy accident. Iroquois Indian legend claims when a hunter came back to his camp from a foray, he smelled something deliciously sweet coming from the boiling kettle in which dinner was being cooked. Turned out, a broken maple branch had dripped sap into the kettle. And voila, going forward, maple syrup was added to the menu.
