Old Books Find New Homes

"Getting old books into new hands" -- and fundraising -- are Southport's Pequot Library's goals for its spectacular outdoor book sale from July 23-27. The sale, now in its 50th year, features more than 140,000 items. Carve out some time to sort through hidden gems -- and not-so-hidden ones --  in 50 categories of books as well as CDs, tapes, LPs, audio books, and more. And when you need to come up for air, Jordan Catering of Darien's food tent fortifies visitors with refreshments.    Sunday, July 25 is set aside as a day-long celebration of Young Readers with the theme “Make a Splash.” (The theme coordinates with the library's summer reading program.) Kids can immerse themselves in craft-making activities while their parents peruse. Little ones who dress up as a sea- or water-related character from a summer reading book can pick a book to have for free. At 1 p.m. energetic musical performer Marcia Louis ups the tempo, making ukulele, guitar and banjo music and leading a rousing sing-along. The sale's hours are: Friday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit the Pequot Library website.
