Fran Lebowitz Shows Up for "Public Speaking"

You probably know Martin Scorsese as the world class feature film director of "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull,""Goodfellas" and other award-winning movies. On March 23 at 7:30 p.m., Stamford's Avon Theatre screens Scorsese's documentary, "Public Speaking," which profiles writer and revered wit Fran Lebowitz. She will be present for the screening, and answer questions from the audience after the film's showing.Produced in 2010 by HBO, "Public Speaking" was nominated for a Gotham Independent Film Award. Its subject, Fran Lebowitz, began as a columnist for Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine in the 1970s. Though she has published a few books, her celebrity is primarily based on her sometimes caustic wit, her extensive social life -- and her enduring case of writer's block. Gina Bellafante, in her New York Times review of "Public Speaking," precisely pinpoints the parameters of Lebowitz's narrow but influential fanbase. "To many Americans — millions, really — the name Fran Lebowitz doesn’t mean much. But in certain precincts, vital to the cultural functioning of both coasts, she is famously a friend, a crank, a climber, a cautionary tale, an iconoclast and a mouth. In 'Public Speaking,' Martin Scorsese’s enormously enjoyable and perceptive documentary about her, Ms. Lebowitz’s endearing narcissism is a study in the notion that arrogance and insecurity are largely two sides of the same cocktail coaster."

Don't miss the chance to peek into Lebowitz's peripatetic life, as documented by Martin Scorsese, and especially, to be in the audience for an audience with the inimitable Fran Leibowitz. Tickets are $20. For more information, visit the Avon's website.
