"Follies" Entices with Style

Stephen Sondheim's music is an "m" word magnet: magical, meaningful and moving are just three (there are ... more!)  He is the composer-lyricist of Broadway shows including  "Company," "Sunday in the Park with George," "A Funny Thing Happened" and also, the brilliant "Follies." "Follies" won seven Tony awards.  When it opened in 1971, NY Times critic Clive Barnes called it:  "stylish and innovative" and said, "it has some of the best lyrics I have ever encountered, and above all it is a serious attempt to deal with the musical form." The show takes place at a 1970s reunion of the Weismann Follies’ showgirls. They and the men in their lives, reconnect at the old, dilapidated Weismann Theatre the night before it will be torn down and made into a parking lot.  The Town Players of New Canaan perform a shortened, staged concert version of "Follies" at the Powerhouse Theater in Waveny Park, at 8 p.m. on July 23, 24, 30, 31 and August 6 & 7  and on July 25 and August 1, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $25.  Catch it and another "m" word might come to mind: memorable.  For more information, visit the Town Players website.
