When she was 16, Mary Frances Reynolds was crowned "Miss Burbank," and a screen test, a film studio contract and a new first name, Debbie, followed. Six decades later, Hollywood royal Debbie Reynolds, a multi-talent (singer-actor-dancer-writer-raconteur) and show business trouper brings her one woman show to Fairfield's Edgerton Center on April 10.Her list of credits is so long, Debbie Reynolds's website divides it into categories that include films, awards, TV roles and more. Portraying Kathy Selden in the classic 1952 musical, "Singin' in the Rain," is considered by many to be her finest role. It was definitely her breakout and catapulted her to stardom, winning her the moniker "America's Sweeheart."
But she won an Oscar nomination for her indefatigable turn in 1964's "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," the rags to riches story of the real life Margaret Brown, who, among other things, survived the sinking of the Titanic. Reynolds is also indefatigable, taking her show on the road 42 weeks a year. She's aware of her own unsinkability, as she acknowledged in a 2010 interview with The Telegraph (U.K.) 'You could never get Molly Brown down,' she says. She said, 'They tried to sink me but no ones ever gotten me down yet. And thats the way I feel about my life. There have been a lot of mishaps and a lot of difficulties along the way but its been a wonderful life and I never let anything get me down." See the buoyant Debbie Reynolds in person on April 10 for an evening that mixes Hollywood lore with a little Las Vegas and loads of laughs. Her performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20.
