Are you excited about the SoNo Collection?
- Yes, I can't wait for it to open
- Yes, it will be nice to have a mall closer
- Maybe. I'll see when it's done
- No, I never go to malls
- No, I wish something else had gone on that site
The Wall Street Journal asked the same thing. They took a look at what they called a big mall operator's "unthinkable" decision to build a mall.
GGP Inc. officially broke ground on the SoNo Collection mall in August, with dozens of officials wielding shovels. And cranes now hover over the construction site nestled among Route 7, I-95 and the Metro-North train tracks at the entrance to South Norwalk.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the SoNo Collection, set to open in 2019 with Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom, could be one of the last enclosed malls ever built in the U.S. The $525 million project will include 80-plus smaller stores and up to 10 restaurants and a movie theater.
The reason? The area is considered "underserved" when it comes to malls, according to the Wall Street Journal.
But the new mall could draw shoppers from nearby malls in Stamford, Danbury and Trumbull, the WSJ said.
Another exception to the rule is the American Dream Meadowlands mega-project under construction in New Jersey, which will include a water park and theme park, the Wall Street Journal said.
