The Greenwich High swim team scored its most dominating win yet this season Wednesday over Westhill/Stamford. The Cardinals easily took the 200-meter medley relay as well as the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays, racking up a comfortable lead. Erin Calderoni blew away the competition in the 500-meter freestyle, almost matching her personal best time and finishing nearly a full 20 seconds better than the second-place finisher. Greenwich went on to take the meet 110-74, but coach Dick Hawks still sees room for improvement.
"We're still moving a bunch of kids around to see who should be in what event," Hawks said. "Some of it worked, some of it didn't and we found out what we needed to find out. We still haven't put together a full-throttle relay, but when kids get a second chance at an event, they're really getting better."
Greenwich relied mostly on its big wins in the relays to rack up points. It had success in four individual races with Calderoni, Morgan Karetnick taking the 200-meter freestyle in 1:58.54, Sam Hill grabbing the 100-meter freestyle in 56.18, and Megan Mahoney winning diving with 202.65 points. Sisters Sam and Kim Hill tied for second place in the 50-meter freestyle with identical times of 25.59 seconds.
Westhill won the majority of the individual events, but Greenwich built up too great a lead with its resounding relay wins. Calderoni was pleased with her individual performance and how the team racked up points.
"It was a pretty good win today. It will help to have a big team this year, and it's good we got a lot of points today," Calderoni said. "We're still trying to figure out who will be best in each race, but we have time to find our footing. We're ready to break records."
Greenwich travels to a meet in Ridgefield on Friday.
