The Reading Champions program, born from the United Way of Greenwich five years ago, supports the values of Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich by "collaborating with community partners to stimulate the improvement of youth development and offer an environment in which kids can succeed and reach their full potential," the release said.

Reading Champions is offered from mid-October until the last week in May to all club members (with a focus on elementary aged members) who need extra help with their fluency in reading. This year, the club graduated 17 members who worked with eight dedicated tutors.

The United Way of Greenwich’s Reading Champions has a home in 13 sites with more than 100 trained tutors working with 344 children in Greenwich local schools and after-school programs. This program follows a specific curriculum that has been designed by literacy specialists in Greenwich Public Schools to help improve reading skills and build fluency.

The Reading Champions program at the Club meets daily with tutors assigned to work individually with each child for 30 minutes. Greenwich public school reading specialists report that this program has a 96 percent success rate of children graduating the program and meeting proficiency goals in reading.
