Falcons Pour On Offense, Head to Finals

As the rain poured harder throughout the evening, Fairfield Ludlowe girls’ lacrosse team played just as hard.  The near-monsoon conditions seemed to strengthen the Falcons as they pulled away in the second half en route to an 18-7 victory over the Haddam-Killingworth Cougars and to the Division II finals.

The Falcons and Cougars traded goals early in the game as the two teams scored a combined nine goals in the first thirteen minutes of play.  Fairfield Ludlowe was able to build a small cushion going into halftime with a 7-4 lead.  When the Falcons returned from the locker room, they put the pedal to the floor and never let up.

“We’re a second half team,” Falcons senior Hayley Welke said.  Welke scored four goals in the game, despite playing with plantar fasciitis.  “It always helps to kick it up in the second half.  We ended pretty strong.”

Fairfield Ludlowe dominated the second half with eleven goals, including four from sophomore Sarah Nesi.  The offense was so overpowering with time of possession that Haddam-Killingworth only got off six shots on goal in the entire second half.

“They had the fire in them and something just started to click,” Falcons head coach Amy Alvord said.  “I had a lot of confidence in my girls and they were really hungry tonight.  We had a lot of skill coming in and it was just a question as to whether they were ready.”

Fairfield Ludlowe will match up against Staples High School in the Division II finals on Saturday.  Players and coaches agree that the game will be a fight to the finish.

“It will definitely, without a doubt, be the toughest game of the season,” Welke said.   “But we’ve already beaten them twice, so we can do it.”
