Fairfield Warde Lacrosse Nabs First State Playoff Bid

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — For the first time since the split of Fairfield High School in 2005, the Warde boys lacrosse team is headed to a state playoff game. “This means a lot for the program,” Warde coach Tom Cunningham said. “It’s a big step for us.”The Mustangs rolled past Bunnell, 14-2, at home Friday night to clinch a Class L playoff berth for the first time in the program's history. Warde's sophomore attack Austin Armas led the way, scoring three goals and three assists as the Mustangs picked up their fifth win in six games.“I gave it my all,” Armas said. “We knew what was at stake, and we wanted to get into states badly.”Warde got on the board early with a goal by Jack Bambach just 16 seconds into the game. With 7:40 left, Armas was credited with a goal after a Bunnell defender attempted to pass to the goalie but the ball went inside the net, giving Warde a 2-0 lead. Kevin Robinson found Michael Pehota in front of the net with 6:29 left, and 16 seconds later Brendan King scored off an assist by Mike Adams. Matt Petroccio put one in the net, followed by Armas and Bambach's second goals of the quarter, extending the lead to 7-0. Kyle Scheetz hit a first quarter buzzer-beater to put Warde on top, 8-0.Sheetz, Armas and Petroccio went on to score a goal more each, along with second half goals by Cooper Wicke, Joey Marx and Charlie Edison as nine different players scored.

It has been a dramatic turnaround for the Mustangs after going winless in the conference and winning just one game last year. Warde improves to a 7-5 season record. The Mustangs will look to continue their recent hot streak at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Wilton.
