Fairfield United U13s Reach Cup Final

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield United under-13 Revolution boys soccer team defeated Shelton in penalty kicks, 1-0, on Tuesday to advance to the finals of the Connecticut Cup. Fairfield's U12 Black Tornadoes dropped a 2-1 contest to Stamford in another Connecticut Cup semifinal.

At Tomlinson Middle School, the Revolution battled Shelton through 70 minutes without a goal. Both teams had several close calls and battled through a scoreless 30-minute overtime.

In penalty kicks, each team made four of its first five shots. Fairfield goalie Gabe Dumoulin stopped Shelton's final kick to seal the win.

"Our team played with heart, character and poise. Gabe was certainly the man of the match with the best game-saving stops of the season and standing strong in the penalty kicks," said Wayne Schwaeber, technical coach for the Revolution.

The Black Tornadoes traveled to Stamford to replay a game that started Saturday but was canceled due to the storm. Fairfield struck first before Stamford scored a goal to tie it. Stamford scored on a fortunate bounce in the final 30 seconds to win.

Parent coach Brian O'Day credited his team with "a great game. They played well and showed a lot of spirit. We had a very strong showing in this season's Connecticut Cup – and look forward to next year!"

The date for the U13 championship game will be either Sunday, Nov. 6, or Saturday, Nov. 12. The date and time will be announced later this week.
