Woman Charged with Theft at Fairfield Elder Home

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport woman was charged with taking money from a resident at Fairfield’s Sullivan-McKinney Elder Housing complex Tuesday. Hilda Young, 56, is accused of disguising herself as a nurse in an attempt to get cash from the building’s residents in February.

The victim, an 86-year-old man, reported the theft on Feb. 25. He told police that a woman dressed in scrubs came into his room while he was in bed. The suspect went to a pair of the man’s pants that were lying on a nearby chair, and took $50 from his wallet, according to the police report.

Other residents in the complex told police that the suspect was also soliciting money from people on the same floor. The witnesses said she told the potential victims she was collecting money for a resident’s birthday party.

“This is just one example of the fact that our elderly population is always at risk from people that look at them as easy targets,” said Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara.

Young was identified as a suspect when a local resident saw a photo released by the local media and called police, according to the report. She was arrested on a warrant Tuesday afternoon. Young was charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree larceny. Her bond was set at $10,000, and she is due in court May 18.
