What's Happening This Weekend in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Garden shows, fun fundraisers and another spring carnival fill up Fairfield’s calendar this weekend. Here’s a listing of some of the events happening in and around town over the next three days.

Friday, May 18

Bike to Work Day Breakfast: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The Fairfield Bike Walk Coalition is hosting an event in honor of Bike to Work Day at Chef’s Table, 1561 Post Road. There will be free coffee and pastries for anyone who arrives by bike or on foot, a free bike tuning station and discussion about the group’s efforts to make Fairfield safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Jennings Beach Carnival: 6 to 10 p.m.: The annual carnival to benefit Holy Family Parish begins Thursday night and continues through the weekend. The event is in the parking lot of Jennings Beach, 880 S. Benson Road. The carnival continues Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

“Splish Splash” Flower Show: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Sasqua Garden Club of Fairfield hosts a flower show at the Christ and the Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport. The event is free, anc continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, May 19

Beardsley Zoo 90th Birthday Party: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo  celebrates its 90th anniversary with a full day of special shows and activities. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for kids under 12 and free for kids 3 and under. 1875 Noble Ave., Bridgeport.

Greens Farms Garden Club Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Greens Farms Garden Club will sell perennials from members’ gardens. The sale is at the Sherman Green Gazebo, at the intersection of Reef Road and the Post Road.

Cop on Top: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tip a Cop: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Fairfield Police will be at the parking lot of Chip’s Family Restaurant, 525 Tunxis Hill Road, collecting money for the Special Olympics. Police officers will be perched on top of command vehicles and soliciting donations from passing cars. The event will also feature music and free food. Then, officers will try their hands as wait staff in the restaurant, with their tips going to the Special Olympics.

Fairfield County Ducky Derby: 1 p.m. Hundreds of rubber ducks will race down Fairfield’s Mill River in a fundraiser for St. Catherine Academy, the diocese of Bridgeport’s special needs school in Fairfield. A $10 donation buys a duck for the race, with trophies going to the top finishers. Parking is available at St. Pius X Church, 835 Brookside Drive.

Spaces and Places Opening Reception: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fairfield photographer Maggie Moffitt Rae opens an exhibit of her landscapes at the Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Ave. She will be on hand at the library’s Perkins Gallery to discuss her work in a free reception Saturday.

Sunday, May 20

Fairfield Warde Flea Market: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The monthly flea market returns to the parking lot of Fairfield Warde High School, 755 Melville Ave. Vendors will be on hand selling home goods, jewelry, antiques, fashion accessories, CDs, DVDs, clothing and other items.  

Fun in the Sun: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fairfield eighth-grader Samantha Strelzer  was chosen as a People to People Ambassador for Fairfield, earning the right to travel to Europe with the organization. She will hold a fundraiser in the parking lot of Old Navy, 2215 Black Rock Turnpike, featuring a fire truck, Kung Fu Panda, free food and a raffle for a trip to Antigua. She also will be collecting toiletry donations for Operation Hope.
