Female Cops To Teach Women About Self-Defense

Imagine you're walking down a dark Fairfield street late at night. Suddenly, an attacker lunges at you and grabs you. Would you know how to defend yourself? Detective Kerry Dalling and Sgt. Beth Irizarry want to make sure you can. The two Fairfield Police officers are hosting a Rape Aggression Defense course in conjunction with Fairfield University.

The first step is an Assault Prevention class Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the university. Dalling and Irizarry will go over ways that women can protect themselves in public places and the workplace. The class includes ways to identify suspicious activity, how to report a crime and what women need to know about the court procedures connected with violent acts.

At the first class, the officers will announce the schedule and locations for the deeper RAD course, which will teach more active self-defense techniques. The course is open to all women, regardless of age or physical ability.

"We've had people ask, 'Is it for elderly people as well?'" said Sgt. Suzanne Lussier, public affairs officer for the FPD. "We say, 'Absolutely.'"
