Fairfield Gives Its Vietnam Vets 'Overdue Welcome'

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It’s been more than 35 years since the United States pulled its last troops out of Vietnam. But Fairfield gave the veterans of that war a “long overdue” welcome home Monday.

The theme of Fairfield’s 2012 Memorial Day parade was “We Welcome Home Our Brave Vietnam Veterans, Who Served So Well, With Heartfelt Thanks, Respect and Honor This 2012.” A collection of Vietnam veterans led the parade, including a group from the South Vietnamese Army.

Boyd Saxon, a former commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 302 of Newtown, offered the address at a ceremony after the parade. He invited a pair of seventh-graders from St. Thomas Aquinas, Mary Rose and Andrea, who welcomed the Vietnam vets assembled on behalf of the town. Saxon then said a few words to remember those lost in all wars.

“They’re not gone. They live with us,” Saxon said. “They live on in our hearts, more than when they were alive.”
