Eleven Fairfield residents escaped their burning home Thursday night, but not after the blaze caused $1,000 in damage to the house. Fairfield Firefighters responded to a call at 159-165 Forest Avenue, a four-family house, around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night. A fire broke out in the buildings basement because of flammable materials accidentally left down there.
Two of the houses residents tried to control the fire with a hand extinguisher, but could not put it out before firefighters arrived. The fire crew, led by Assistant Chief Scott Bisson, was able to evacuate the remaining people and flood the basement before the blaze could spread to the rest of the house and cause structural damage.
Because of the heavy snow, firefighters first needed to dig out the nearest fire hydrant before they could put out the fire. Bisson said the fire department has been working to clear as many of the 1,100 hydrants in town since Thursday mornings storm, but asked residents for help clearing out the rest.
If the hydrant on your street is buried and cant be found quickly by firefighters, it is like living on a street with no fire hydrants, Bisson said in a press release.
