Fairfield Library Adds Fun to Summer Reading

The school year ends in less than 10 days for Fairfield Public Schools. That means it’s time to start thinking about summer reading. The district’s summer reading lists are available online now. But the Town Librarian Karen Ronald has a plan to make sure Fairfield’s kids speed through even more books this summer.

The Fairfield Public Library is running contests all week for summer readers. Kids in any age group can sign up for the library’s One World, Many Stories contest. They can enter the books they have read into the library’s system to earn rewards.

Students who read five books get a coupon for a free kids’ meal at Subway and a free admission to Quassy Amusement Park. If they finish 10 books by the end of the summer, they earn tickets to a Bridgeport Bluefish game and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers opening game, plus $10 toward a savings account at TD Bank.

Older kids can earn prizes as well. Teens entering grades six and up can log their progress online and post reviews to Teen Librarian Nicole Scherer’s Facebook page. For every 200 pages they read, Fairfield’s teens earn an entry in a raffle for prizes such as a surf board, a Flip camcorder and autographed books.

Even adults can get prizes for summer reading this year. The library’s program, Summer Destinations, picks a geographical area around the world to focus on each week. Avid readers can register for weekly raffle drawings for gift buckets, which include gift certificates and other prizes.
