Motorists planning on traveling through Darien can expect delays and detours as contracting crews from Eversource kick off a “significant natural gas expansion project.”

The Darien Police Department issued an alert on Thursday, warning that beginning next week, several roadways are expected to see lane closures and motorists can expect delays in the area as the project begins, which is expected to last several months.

According to police, work will begin on Ledge Road, near the intersection of Route 1 on Monday, April 9, working toward the town’s transfer station and the Darien Public Works garage. Work will also commence on Greenwood Avenue between Camp Avenue and Route 106.

Police said that the scope of the project “will require the temporary closure of Greenwood Avenue during the normal workday. Only residents and guests of residents will have access to the roadway while work is ongoing. Non-residents and motorists will have to detour onto Camp Avenue and Hoyt Street to make their way through the area.

The Greenwood Avenue closures are expected to last upwards of 10 days.

During the project, police said that there will be officers and traffic agents in the area to help facilitate the flow of vehicles in the area and assist motorists.

“The Police Department asks that all motorists plan trips through the affected areas accordingly and consider alternate routes if possible. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as this natural gas expansion project moves forward. Further traffic advisories and updates will be issued as required.”
