Darien Little League president Tony Farren has been selected as the Fairfield County Sports Commission's Sports Person of the Year for Darien. The commission recognizes individuals or teams in 15 communities. Farren will be among the honorees at the annual Sports Night awards dinner at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.
Farren was recognized for his leadership in the Little League, which has become the largest in North America with more than 1,400 participants. He also instituted Operation DLL Cares, which collects and distributes care packages to troops overseas. Darien also had one of its most successful seasons on the field, with two district champions in softball and several baseball teams advancing deep into the playoffs.
Sports Persons of the Year in other area towns include Cam Atkinson, Greenwich, a member of the Boston College hockey national champion team; the New Canaan High School girls hockey team, which won FCIAC and state championships; Norwalk football players Silas Redd and Kevin Pierre-Louis, who led King's football team to the FAA championship; the Westhill High School girls soccer team in Stamford, which won the Class LL state championship; Westport's Bob Davis, a longtime baseball umpire; and Weston's Brian McMahon, a youth sports league administrator and the Wilton High School girls lacrosse team, which captured the league championship.
The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is the one-stop resource for the sports community, with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports. The commission, with the exception of the executive director, is an all-volunteer group that gives financial support and its resources back to its communities, primarily focused on 110,000 school-age youngsters.
