Darien's Bunny Boogie Goes High Tech

DARIEN, Conn. – The annual Bunny Boogie three-mile race has marched to the head of the line in using technology for pre-registered runners.

The 31st edition of the three-mile event begins Saturday at 9 a.m. at Pear Tree Point in Darien. Runners who pre-register can go to Runner’s Roost in Darien through Friday at 6 p.m. and use a laptop to call up or input their information. They will be assigned a bib number on the spot. The process is similar to self-serve lines for rental cars and travel tickets.

“They’ve been using the system in Hartford area races, but this is a first for Fairfield County,’’ race director Jim Gerweck said. "It makes the whole pre-registration process a lot cleaner and more efficient."

The race has some other features that make it worthwhile for runners. The mostly downhill course is one of the fastest in the area. Women also get a 2:30 headstart. Finally, the winners receive edible prizes instead of trophies.

Last year’s race was run in rain and chilly temperatures. Daniel Lennox of Beford, N.Y., won the men’s race in 16:22, while Julie Heaphy of Norwalk took the women’s crown in 18:06.

Complete information is available online. Check-in begins Saturday at 8 a.m.
