Ex-Darien Fire Chief A. Robert Szanto Dies at 66

DARIEN, Conn. – A. Robert Szanto of Darien died June 7 at his home surrounded by family. He was 66.

Szanto was a longtime member of the Darien Volunteer Fire Department, serving in various positions, including nine years as chief. 

Born April 13, 1946, in Norwalk, he was the son of Andrew and Mary Tozar Szanto. He was a lifelong resident of Darien and was married to Maureen Byrnes Szanto, who survives him. 

Szanto worked for the Stamford Tent and Event Services Co. He enjoyed cooking and caring for his home and was an avid NASCAR fan. At the Fire Department, Szanto served as the Darien fire marshal and as a member of the Fire Commission. He was also a founding member of the Fairfield County Fire Chiefs Emergency Plan. 

In addition to his wife, survivors are a son, Andrew Szanto; two daughters, Danielle and Ashleen Szanto; a brother, Richard (Cathy) Szanto, of Southbury; and two nieces and two nephews. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Darien Volunteer Fire Department, 848 Post Road. Lesko and Polke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Darien Fire Department or to the DFD Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.
